Post Tripod centre columns

Simple question: Is there any disadvantage to using the short centre column all the time?

My Redsnapper came with both short and long to allow you to get closer to the ground, I never extend the centre column as I don't need the height (and it makes any tripod wobbly). I've left the long one on since buying the tripod as I thought the extra metal hanging below the head might work as a mass damper, but I'm not sure how much difference it really makes?

It's a hollow tube so i doubt it will at much mass for damping.
Will the tripod be easier to carry when you put the short one in if not you might as well leave the long one in, you never know when you need the extra length.

Well, it doesn't make much difference to the weight or ease of carrying but the short column does mean you can get lower down. Doubt I'll ever need the extra length, I only tend to use a tripod for landscapes and macros so being able to get down to ground level is more useful. Now if only I had liveview so I didn't have to kneel on the inevitably soggy ground to see through the viewfinder!

You've answered your answer then, use the smaller centre column.

For the viewfinder, a 90 degree angled one might help a bit
