Post Re: Why I love Pentax

It's always a bit of chance involved in what system you end up with. And to be fair, these days all digital SLRs are capable of producing stunning results.

In my case the choice was Pentax as I had a Ricoh film SLR (hey, now I'm back in Ricoh's quarters!) and they used the K bajonet. To use my lenses with the dSLR it was a natural choice. I have to say that I also was attracted by the small size of the *istD.

In the end I never used the 28 mm lens I had for the Ricoh (I think there was some issue with it on the Pentax, same for the 50 mm Ricoh lens). So the only lens I used was the Kiron 70-210 mm. I shot my most liked picture with it:

I later replaced the Kiron with a 70-300 Sigma, mainly for the longer end and autofocus. Now I'm mostly shooting manual focus, I think I have to dig out that Kiron again...

With the *istD I really got infected with the photography bug, the K20D certainly didn't cure that and now with the K-5 I have to accept a chronic infection. Smile

Post Re: Why I love Pentax

Don't tell anyone, but back in my film days I used to shoot Canon Smile An EOS 5, to be specific.I got it because I knew I wanted an SLR for the versatility. At the time I was taking a lot of macro shots of my reef aquarium, and I also took it on a 10 month backpacking journey around Asia. Meet Pilipus from the island of Siberut. I stayed in his house for a few days, and he taught me how to make a loincloth out of the bark of a tree. I'll spare you the picture of me in the loincloth Wink

The EOS 5 was a big camera for a film camera, with motor drive etc. It was after the 10 month journey that I decided that when I finally upgraded to digital it would be the smallest SLR i could find. So a few years later as DSLR prices came down to affordable levels I read a fantastic review of the Pentax K100D Super which raved about the SR system as well as how small it was, and found it available for about £300 at a UK warehouse store, so I jumped on it. Been very pleased every since, especially when I occasionally pop into a shop and pick up a gigantic Nikon or Canon. Even the D7000 which I suppose is technically is pretty similar to the K5, feels soooo much bigger.

Post Re: Why I love Pentax

I had a very old manual Pentax in the early 70's.
Gave it away when I "upgraded" to a Minolta X300 then Dynax.
For my 60th birthday I was bought a brand new DSLR - you,ve guessed, a Pentax K10D mainly (I think) because my son found some old Pentax M42 lenses which gave him a name to look for that he knew I would appreciate.

I've probably taken more pics in the last 3-4 years than in the previous 40 and still on a learning curve.

I'm not sure about the "no cheap 50mm" comment.

Pentax don't make a cheap 50, but they do make its equivalent for APS-C sensors in the DA 35mm f2.4 which is a lot more useful as a standard lens.

But many people uses these "cheap 50mm" lenses for portraits. So that's why still people miss them.

Post Re: Why I love Pentax

They used to make a cheap 50! I remember when I got my K100D a brand new FA50/1.4 was £150. I thought that was a lot of money then (little did I know how much i would spend on camera gear over the next few years). Then Pentax doubled the price! Oh those were the days (FA77 was £350... why oh why didn't I buy one then)
