Post Reducing image file size

Hi everyone,

I'm finally getting round to building a website - mainly so that family in the UK can see what I'm up to.

I want to reduce the file size of my photos so they don't take up so much space on the server - but am not sure how to do this without losing image quality.

Anyone go any tips please?

Many thanks, Very Happy

I resize to 2048 when saving as a jpg from Lightroom then I edit using a very old version of Paintshop Pro when it was still owned by JASC, it's version 8. I'm not sure how it does it but a save reduces the file size considerably. (Export tends to preserve the original file size) I find they are still perfectly good for websites.

As an example this photo is 936 kb

Post Re: Reducing image file size

Look for Save for Web option. The EXIF data holds a huge amount of stuff, but not a lot of space. However let an Adobe app anywhere near and it'll put boatloads of stuff in EXIF! Save for web does some size reduction of its own, as well as purge ALL EXIF. So if you rely on EXIF holding your watermark, copyright, etc., you may want to use a small free-standing program to add just what you want back in.

Broadly as Sas, but export from RAW using Lightroom for processing and Jeffrey Freidl's Flickr publishing plug-in using a 1000 pixel long side sizing constraint. Works fine for hand held devices like I-Pad and smart phones but might be a tad small for a computer user. Use the same formulation (without my copyright watermark) for the Camerada site (a collaborative group of 8 all based in the Bath area - here's a link to my personal gallery on the site.

Camerada - personal gallery

Sas has a site using a different software package/house to that above.

Sas - Capturing the Moment

Hopefully that will give you some ideas about sizing as it looks at the preview and detail viewing levels, albeit using different presentation schemes
